A great subject to tackle, and a great take on it too. Change is a gift, if we can see it that way! Joel http://poetry101.typepad.com

Why I Write Poetry
Poetry expresses esoteric images in a magical way, that prose cannot. Poetry uses few words, sometimes one word to bring a picture to the reader's mind, without worrying about sentence structure, paragraphs and grammar.
Why I Read Poetry
Poetry can visually and graphically heighten the reader's experience.

Children's poetry is an excellent teaching tool.
My Published Books
Five, Six, Pick-up Sticks is a book of poetry for young children, ages 4-8 that expresses the humorous and serious aspects of growing up and what it feels like to be a child.

Five poems published in the anthology, Love and Romance, edited by Deborah Simpson.
About Me
I wrote my first poem at age 8, after reading Bambi. I was so impressed by the book, that I had to write about it and found expression in poetry. This has driven me to write poetry most of my life.
I belong to a wonderful poetry group that meets once a month. We share our poems and enjoy eachother's company of like-minded, creative individuals. The ages range from 12 to 92. It's an amazing group of people.

I am currently writing more children's poems to republish Five, Six, Pick-up Sticks as an enhanced second edition.

I write adult poetry, too on many different topics. To leave a legacy of my life experiences for my children and grandchildren, I am writing a memoir in poetry of my experiences growing up in New York City and the New York Catskill Mountains.

Last year I won second place in a poetry contest with the American Association of University Women in Florida.

My dream is to write enough adult poems to publish a book.

New Poem

I wrote a new poem for one of my poetry groups. The key word was changes. This is another departure from my usual free verse poetry.

Life's Gift

Life's gift to us is change
A chance to rearrange
Ignore the prearranged
And make a fair exchange

Perhaps an alteration
Or a tiny variation
Some miniscule mutation
Thus breaking our stagnation

Compelling us to move
Into a different groove
Where we have to prove
What others disapprove

Although it may seem strange
And sometimes disarrange
Friendships… Continue

Contemplation of Peace

This morning I was inspired by an assignment from one of my poetry groups, to write a poem around the word mystery. The first thing that came into my head was what rhymes with mystery and I came up with history...then I got an email about a prayer for peace and this is what resulted. It is a departure for my usual unstructured poems in that it has a first and third, second and fourth line rhyme, which carries on through the entire poem. Also, there is 7-6-7-6 rhythm.

Poetry Inspiration

I was inspired to write a poem this morning while I sat at my computer in the Florida room looking out at the tranquil lake. This was written in real time while blogging on MySpace, so I thought I would repost it on the Poets' Lounge.

Florida Summers

Sticky, wet, hot and humid
Thunderstorms blasting the sky daily
Darkening the world to gray-black
Sending shards of lightning to earth

Torrents of rain pour from the clouds
In short bursts of life-giving liquid
To the joyous thirst… Continue

Rachel's Poetry

It must be in the genes. My granddaughter, Rachel is ten-years-old and writes lovely poetry. These are her latest poem.

The Secret Place

Silky grass and
smooth water.
My only place to
get away.
Listening to birds
Is that a raven?
Nature's lullaby
pulling me in.

Storms

Clouds are raging and storming at the sun
Because he took away their fun
It was a cloudless day yesterday
So the clouds could not play
The moon felt a… Continue

Rain Again...

It's raining again here in Florida.
They call it the rainy season.
It's very wet and very humid...but oh, so pretty.

The waddling, quacking mallard ducks and their tiny ducklings love it.

A pair of black-bellied whistling ducks just twaddled by.

Egrets and herons fish in the lake when the rain plops on the water.

Anahingas spread their wings to dry on the shore after a fishing expedition.
Silly birds trying to dry their wings in the rain.

Wood storks chase away all interlopers in their fish… Continue
